The Kentucky Coalition for English Learners (KyCEL) 2026 Summer Institute will take place at the Owensboro Convention Center on June 15th & 16th, 2026.
We are very pleased to announce that the Summer Institute will feature national presenters Elise White Diaz and Dr. Claude Goldenberg. Our keynote addresses will be presented by 2024 National Teacher of the Year Missy Testerman and Dr. Carol Salva, an award‑winning educator, author, and consultant.
"Late Winter Learning Series"
We are looking forward to our first session, next Monday afternoon, 3/2/26! The session begins at 4 PM Central /5 PM Eastern and will last for 90 minutes.
As a reminder, the Learning Series consists of three 90-minute virtual sessions on Monday March 2nd, Monday March 9th and Monday March 16th. Each session begins at 4 PM Central / 5 PM Eastern.
March 2nd & 16th: Dr. Claude Goldenberg, Nomellini & Olivier Professor of Education, Emeritus, Graduate School of Education at Stanford University will be our guest speaker for both of these sessions. Dr. Goldenberg is a national expert on literacy development and multilingual learners, and he was a member of the National Literacy Panel for Language Minority Children and Youth. He will be speaking about the Science of Reading for emerging multilingual students.
March 9th: Dr. Gwen Snow, Principal of the Newcomer Academy in Jefferson County Public Schools, Mr. Scott Beldon, Resource Teacher at Newcomer Academy and Ms. Nina Flores, the Literacy Interventionist at Newcomer Academy will be our guest speakers. Their session will address the Newcomer Academy approach to support students' English literacy development. They will also lead some conversation around the development of a working definition for "students with interrupted formal education" or SIFEs. Finally, they will address some of the adaptations they have made in programming at the Newcomer Academy.
The registration fee for the Late Winter Learning Series is $75.00. This fee includes all 3 sessions. We had a great virtual institute! Participants discovered innovative approaches for language instruction, cultivated a deeper understanding of cultural nuances, and forged connections with fellow educators from around the state. Together, we are shaping brighter futures for all learners!
